There's no guarantee how long one may live. Morbid, perhaps, or maybe an inspirational mantra to live life to the fullest. For those who do worry about their time on this mortal coil, there are ways to increase your chances of a longer life by taking certain measures like eating healthy, getting adequate exercise and sleep, and lowering your stress levels. However, some may have an easier time with this than others, whether it's because of better access to services or fewer opportunities for managing health.

24/7 Tempo compiled a list of the city in each state with the "shortest life expectancy," and the site named Albany as the Georgia city with the worst in the state. According to the site, Albany has an average life expectancy of 73.6 years, compared to the state average of 77.31. Here are some additional statistics:

  • People who don't exercise regularly: 29.6% (state: 24.5%)
  • Adults who get fewer than 7 hours of sleep: 40.7% (state: 35.8%)
  • Adults who smoke regularly: 21.1% (state: 16.3%)
  • Adult obesity rate: 41.4% (state: 34.3%)

This is how the site determined its list:

"To determine the cities in every state with the shortest life expectancy, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on life expectancy in U.S. metropolitan areas from County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Additional data on smoking rate, physical inactivity, and insufficient sleep also came from the 2023 CHR."
