Four Australian Kids Steal Parents' Car And Go On 600-Mile Road Trip

Four kids take parents' car on epic 600-mile road trip

Four Australian children between the ages of 10 and 14 are back with their parents after they reportedly packed up some fishing rods and stole one of their parents' SUV to go on an epic 600-mile road trip along the Australian coast, authorities said.

Authorities told CNN that one of the children left a goodbye note for one of their parents before they left on their 578-mile adventure from Rockhampton in Queensland to Grafton in New South Wales. The four runaway kids are through to have shared driving responsibilities after taking one of their parents' four-wheel-drive Nissan Patrol car. The quartet were taken into custody around 10:40 p.m. Sunday evening, police said.

"It's a pretty big journey. It's a long way for a person to do it, but I suppose a couple cans of Red Bull and you're likely to do anything," inspector Darren Williams told Nine News.

Police managed to catch up with the runaways after triangulating a cell phone signal.

"When we got there, they wouldn't open up ... they've come under notice because of illegal behavior, doing drive-offs at petrol stations," Williams said.

Police had to use a baton to break into the car.

All four children were arrested and will likely face charges, though police did not list the alleged offenses.
