A popular brand of bread has been recalled from stores in several states over a serious health risk.

Hartford Bakery, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for several lots of its Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf bread due to the potential presence of hazelnuts that were not declared on the packaging, according to a recall notice shared July 10 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. This could cause a "serious or life-threatening" allergic reaction in consumers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts.

The recall was initiated after visible hazelnuts were discovered in nearly 900 loaves of bread. While the packaging notes the product "may contain tree nuts," it does not state the same for hazelnuts.

Packaged in a flexible plastic bag, the affected products have an expiration date of 07/13/2025, UPC 24126018152 and include only the following Lot Codes: T10 174 010206, T10 174 010306, T10 174 010406, T10 174 020206, T10 174 020306 and T10 174 020406. The impacted products were sold in retailers like Kroger and Walmart in a dozen states around the country, including Georgia.

There have been multiple complaints of consumers noticing nuts in the bread prior to consuming, and at least one consumer report of a reaction in connection with the recall. No major illnesses have been reported.
